Live Event with Q&A
“Foley artist” is the magician behind every sound in a movie. Foley artist is a very crucial role for films, however, they are the minority of the minority in the film industry. Whether it be the sound of stirring cooking oil in the frying wok, the footsteps of the actor chasing the bus, or the spooky knocks on the door in horror movies, these are all made by the foley artists from the tools that we would never imagine.
This year, we’ve invited remarkable foley artists from Taiwan, Canada and the United States. The first guest, Mr. Ding Yi Hu from Taiwan, a winner of Golden Horse Award for Outstanding Taiwanese Filmmaker of the Year in 2017, has been a foley artist for more than forty years and worked in hundreds of films. Throughout his career, Mr. Hu bears witness to the Taiwanese cinema history. The second guest, Goro Koyama, is a Japanese Canadian foley with thirty years of experience. Mr. Koyama has received the “Motion Picture Sound Editors Award” (MPSE) with his work on the movie Blade Runner 2049. He is always curious at trying to explore people’s desire to synchronize the sound and film frames. Our panel host, Joanna Fang is a young foley artist, yet has already won an Emmy Award on Outstanding Sound Editing. She is known for her work on the latest feature films such as The Farewell, Manchester by the Sea and Still Alice. The three distinctive foley artists will discuss the secrets of “producing sound effects”, and even demonstrate their techniques, revealing the trade secrets, and show us the true meaning behind the popular foley quote: “If we did our jobs just right, our existence will never be noticed.”
